YORKSHIRE, BASTIANELLI 5TH IN THE OPENING STAGE
The Women’s Tour of Yorkshire has begun with an important 5th place for the Cycling Champion from Rome. Marta Bastianelli confirmed her important moment of shape after her past five wins taken in Spain, Italy and Belgium this season and a pause from the races which started after a triumphal Brabantse Pijl and continued during the Ardennes Classics. She has finally come back in races the last 25th April for the GP Liberazione Pink, in Rome.
The Stage 1 of the English race (Beverley - Doncaster, 132.5 kms) presented an almost fully flat route, with just an altimetrical trouble after the start. The breakaway of the day started after the Intermediate Sprint of Pocklington, and the two attackers could reach a maximal gap of about one minute. The peloton with all the teams of the sprinters, included Alè - Cipollini, worked to prepare the sprint for the captain at the finish in Doncaster, where the Dutch Kirsten Wild took the win.
“This is for sure an important result, and we can fight until the end. The stage tomorrow will be different, with the uphill finish everything can change and we will work to stay in the front.” - declared the Team Manager Fortunato Lacquaniti at the end of the stage.
